We buy more expensive and stronger antiperspirants, we keep checking in secret for sweat marks, and we have a perfume nearby for emergencies. We try to hide from the sun at all costs. And when we run into others who look or smell sweaty, we frown upon them in disapproval. We think to ourselves, âHow can a person not take good care of their personal hygiene like that!â But what if itâs out of their hands? What if its hyperhidrosis? Living with Hyperhidrosis Yes, there are some people born with this medical condition of sweating way too much, even on the coldest of winter days. Others develop this disorder due to different causes related to the nervous system, endocrine system, infections, or other diseases. However, they got the condition, people living with Hyperhidrosis, the condition of excessive sweating from every area on their bodies, are always shamed and looked down upon with disapproval in our society. But have you ever paused for a second to think about how they live their lives? Hyperhidrosis affects more than their sweaty clothes. It affects all aspects of their life, and hereâs a glimpse: Interference with Daily Life People suffering from hyperhidrosis find the most simple of tasks very demanding. Imagine not being able to hold a pen or steer a wheel because your palms are just way too sweaty? Theyâre unable to maintain a normal lifestyle in anyway. Lack Of Clinical Support The worst of all, is that they barely find the support they need. Instead, theyâre treated with negligence and frustration by the medical staff, as theyâre usually misdiagnosed. Theyâre often met statements like âYouâre wasting our timeâ. With the majority of doctors misdiagnosing this condition, how do you think public awareness can be? Many of the patients canât even find adequate information to deal with the condition. Extra Measures And so they go to extreme measure to try and keep it under control. They pack extra wears everywhere they go, buy the strongest of antiperspirants, take multiple showers a day, keep towels and tissues at hand, and maintain many other rituals. Not to mention how they need to keep a financial plan to keep this condition under control. How Hyperhidrosis Affects the Psychosocial Health of its Patients To add to all of the difficulties they face in their lives, hyperhidrosis takes its own toll on their psychosocial wellbeing too. The Detrimental Effects on Social Life How do you think youâd feel if you met a friend and youâre going for a hug, but they can already smell your sweat as soon as they walk into the room? Imagine going out on a date with your months-old-secret-crush, but find them wrinkling their nose in disgust. This might have sounded superficial, but the impact of hyperhidrosis on the social relationships is very serious. These individuals find it very hard to keep friends or even get into relationships, as any and all signs of intimacy feel like a nightmare for them. Theyâd rather hide than expose themselves like that. And so they hide from all social situations, as going out for work or getting stuck in meetings is very uncomfortable. Psychological Effects As a result of all of these effects, their mental health is affected greatly. Soon enough, they lose any self-confidence they had left, and they tend to become more isolated and depressed as time goes by. They lack the basic havens of a human being: a social life, an adequate care, and even the opportunity to prove themselves as productive individuals. Theyâre always living in fear of what others think of them, and eventually, they lose all will to fight back. They become a victim of their own condition, and thereâs very little they can do about it. 7 Methods of Treating Hyperhidrosis The good thing is that, medicine has made it as such there are some ways they can control, even overcome, this condition. The most-commonly used of these methods are: Antiperspirants Normal antiperspirants can do little to help, so they need something stronger than over-the-counter antiperspirants to be much stronger and more efficient. These antiperspirants contain aluminum chloride hexahydrate, and they need to be prescribed by a doctor. Oral Medications When primary treatments donât work, some people seek oral medications, like Robinul, to decrease sweating. However, they come with their side effects of having a dry mouth, finding difficulty in urinating, and suffering from a blurred vision. Botox Botox is known for its aesthetic use in face lifting, but nowadays the relief of sweating with Botox has become the new trend. Itâs even been FDA approved. While itâs a bit uncomfortable to inject in the armpits, the Botox treatment can relieve sweating upto 14 months. Laser Laser can be used to damage the underarm sweat glands, thus stopping sweating altogether. Itâs considered safer and with faster recovery than the miraDry way. MiraDry Technology This technology uses the electromagnetic energy, specifically the microwaves, to target the sweat glands and destroy them, like laser. Itâs been FDA approved, but it usually takes an hour for the procedure to be completed, with anesthesia and cold pressors needed. Iontophoresis Devices These devices have been around for a long time, and they require a bit more maintenance than the previous methods. They temporarily block the sweat ductsâ ability to produce sweat through passing electricity throughout the skin. However, theyâre not painful. Surgery If all else fails, there is a surgical procedure known as Thoracic Sympathectomy that takes care of this sweating once and for all. As effective as it is, itâs a high-risk procedure that even the latest technologies canât ensure its success. Being Aware of the Effects of Hyperhidrosis Sometimes weâre able to put ourselves in other peopleâs shoes when weâve gone through a similar situation, but thatâs not the case with hyperhidrosis. Earlier this year, after a lot of networking, I finally landed an interview with my dream company. I was so nervous and excited, I completely blew it. Looking back, I can see exactly why they wouldnt have taken me seriously. I followed up with thank you notes and received what I believe to be very accurate feedback on how the interview went. Within a couple of months I landed a great job with another company, which is serving me well. I know that someday down the road I will want to work with the dream company again how can I start erasing the negative first impression? Thanks, Second Chance Interviewer How to Overcome a Negative Impression We all make mistakes. But, we dont all learn from mistakes and become better women because of them. Congrats on sending thank you letters and following up with the interviewer for feedback. You are already off to a great start erasing that negative impression. And you used that feedback to nail your next interview and land another great job. Seriously, awesome! First, my two cents. Over the years, recruiters and hiring managers will change. When it comes time to apply and interview again, they may have absolutely no idea that you interviewed there before. Also, over time your interests and dreams will change. Its really not the end of the world! ?? Also, you will be much less stressed and more confident at your next interview! Why? Because you know exactly what to expect! You will be much more prepared than other people interviewing for the same position. How can you go about erasing that negative impression so you can work at the initial dream company someday? Stay in touch. Whatever you do, dont lose their contact information. Definitely, connect with the interviewer on LinkedIn and try to figure out which professional events she/he attends. Be there and run into her/him and tell them what you are up to now. Send them regular updates so that they can see how much you are improving and the knowledge that you are gaining. They will see that you are putting their feedback into practice and they will be very happy to have helped you. There is nothing wrong with keeping this contact. Be consistent and over time the bad impression will fade away. If you were lucky enough to receive feedback on what requirements you did not meet, get those experiences. Take classes or find ways in your current job that you can obtain that experience. Follow the news of your dream company. Follow them everywhere you can such as google news or Linkedin. You want to become an expert at what is going on at the company and how you can help. Start taking notes about the company and what you feel like they could be doing better or differently. Find people at that company or at a competing company that you can ask for an informational interview. This is a great way to find out more about the company and the hiring process. You can ask them what you have to do to get a job at the company and how you can improve your chances. These people may not know about your previous interview so they may have different feedback for you. Dont avoid the bad mistake. Feel free to use it as a learning experience so the future interviewer can see how much you have improved. And feel free to use humor as well if you would like which can often break the tension and provide you an opening for recovery. Unhappiness is good for you
Unhappiness is good for you Its hard to confess to you that Im happy on the farm. The Farmer and I are getting along well, and all that research about how if parents are in a happy marriage the kids are happier â" well, that seems to be true for us. So I spend my days writing career advice and reading about goats and figuring out how to make enough unleavened desserts to keep the Farmer from hating Passover. When I need a break from thinking, I plant my vegetables in perfectly straight rows and hope for no more snow. The thing is, though, that it is not my nature to be sunny and bright. Now theres a study to support my instincts toward stress and anxiety. According to Leslie Martin, author of the new book, The Longevity Project, stress and anxiety that arise from working hard at something that is engaging and exciting to you is actually a more healthy way to live than in a regular state of cheerfulness. Theres a lot of talk about happiness, and how to get it. Of course, I obsess about it on my blog, but, to be clear, I had decided happiness is lame, and we should not be trying to get it. Fortunately, I dont think other people are really looking for happiness either. For example, there is an insane cover story in Psychology Today billed as Four Secrets of Happy Families. One overachiever NYC family in the article has a daughter so obsessed with gymnastics that she practices every day after school while her mom drives to New Haven each week to teach at Yale. Seriously, this is a happy family? I dont think so. I think this is a family full of people who are engaged and passionate about their own stuff. There are scheduling conflicts all week. Family dinners once a week are an accomplishment. The thing is that I dont think it matters. As a society, we are not actually all that interested in happiness. If we were, people would stop relocating for jobs, people would stop eating french fries, and people would stop scheduling their kids for activities that happen close to dinnertime. If anything, I think people are focused on hiding the fact that they desperately want more money and more passion in their lives even though its not fashionable to admit it. And all the research about how money doesnt buy happiness: I think get it, but we are unable to act on the news because we are programmed to want THINGS and money buys things. If we were satisfied with what we had, in cavemen times, wed die as soon as there was a food shortage. Cavepeople always needed to feel like they needed more more more no matter how much they had in order to survive dry spells. So we can intellectually know that money doesnt make us happier, but it doesnt change our DNA. Embedded in our DNA is the sense that we always need to earn 15% more than we are currently earning. So heres the research: You earn 15% more and then you hang out with people a little richer, and then you dont feel as rich because rich is relative, and then you get that semi-rational urge to earn more money again. We cant help it. This conundrum reminds me of how we know that hot women are not better in bed, confident women are better in bed. But it doesnt stop men who are looking for a one-night stand to try hardest for the hottest girl. So you might wonder, are you really happy and you just dont know it? The answer is no. And thats good news. Because look, the Longevity Project says youd be closer to dead if you were closer to happy. I am not sure why we are even talking about happiness when Sonia Lyubomirsky shows that 2/3 of our happiness level is predetermined by our genes. If you are an optimist you are more happy, if you are a pessimist you are less happy. Its a spectrum. You can work hard to change that last third, but instead, why not work hard to find what you are passionate about? Which is why I dont feel settled on the farm. I keep looking around for the next thing Im going to do thats going to disrupt things. Im passionate about disruptions, because when you find a new way to think about something you thought was true, thats disruptive and interesting. Like, Im thinking maybe it wont be so bad if my goats eat my vegetables, because then Ill have an interesting problem to solve. I read a blog that said I can keep goats from eating something by spraying their pee on it. The idea of spraying my spinach with goat pee does not make me happy, but that it might work is fascinating to me.

Do academic degrees offer paltry returns for graduates Students have long been grumbling about the value for money offered by a degree. No doubt youll have sat and worked out how much each of your lectures costs. And to be fair, theres no better incentive for getting out of bed in the morning than the thought of losing £40 by not attending that seminar. But its not just the quality of degrees themselves, but its also our future employment prospects were paying for. Many students are leaving university and struggling to find the jobs they want, and in Robert Halfons (Chairman of the Education Select Committee) speech yesterday, he claimed that up to a third of students are ending up in non-graduate roles after graduation. So this begs the question do we get a good return for our investment? Academic degrees are overrated Or according to Mr Halfon they are anyway. He claims that as a nation weve become obsessed with academic degrees leading to major skills shortages in certain sectors. He went on to say that The labour market does not need an ever-growing supply of academic degrees. Between a fifth and a third of our graduates take non-graduate jobs. Which is pretty shocking news, considering students are now forking out up to £50,000 for a degree. Of course, a degree isnt all about the job you get at the end of it, but to think so many graduates arent getting the job prospects they expect when making that investment is seriously worrying. Universities should tackle the skills shortage If students are paying universities so much, arguably they should be doing more to prepare students for the working world, right? Halfon thinks, If we are going to continue to lavishly furnish universities with taxpayers money, we need to think about how universities can specialise in these areas. But surely universities arent the only ones to blame? The UK education system places prestige on academic subjects over technical skills from a young age, and encourages students to pursue academic subjects at Russell Group universities. Mr Halfon called for more degree apprenticeships to ensure students are developing the skills necessary to succeed in the workplace and that can be no bad thing. The end of the Russell Group status quo? As part of his speech, Mr Halfon went on to argue that Russell Group universities arent doing enough to equip students with the skills they need for the job market. Universities are an integral part of the machinery that feeds into the jobs market. It is reasonable to hold them accountable for the extent to which they prepare students for the world of work. As the higher education system undergoes a much-needed shake up, its increasingly apparent that Russell Group universities might not be providing the most rounded education only 8 of them received a Gold standard in the Governments latest Teaching Excellence Framework. While some Russell Group universities deserve their recognition as elite institutions, others appear to trade well on their brands, while their less reputable counterparts remain unrecognised. A number of companies have recently announced theyll be sticking to education-blind screening meaning they wont consider which university candidates went to as part of the recruitment process. All this means is that a degree is no longer a fast-track ticket to a successful career to prevent students ending up in non-graduate jobs they need the knowledge, skills and support to excel on the job market. Does it help to spend time and effort preparing your CV? Or does it hurt?My approach is to spend as much time as possible in a situation that would help. If I am successful in convincing them of my experience I will feel proud and will have been able to help someone.It is useful for a coach to seek 'help' from others too. In this way the coach and the student may talk about issues and look at past experiences which will improve our knowledge.
